The 24th Flanders Open Monument Day will take place on Sunday, 9 September 2012. This time the theme is ‘Music, word and images’. The thread running through the programme will be places where art and culture have been created and experienced.
The Opera House in Ghent is a place that is engraved in the collective memory, even further back than 1840, when the building was completed in Schouwburgstraat. The Flanders Open Monument Day in the Flanders Opera House in Ghent will therefore be a rich story about the democratisation of (the) opera, a devastating fire, on ascent and decline, the right to vote in the opera, and about seeing and being seen. In short, about the rich history of opera in Ghent, which we hope will herald a promising future.
