Romeo and Juliet

From 13/02/2014 in Ghent - from 21/02/2014 in Antwerp

Tragic love story

William Shakespeare’s renowned tragic love story written in 1595 has inspired a great many composers, one of them being Sergei Prokofiev. What is more, this ballet about the impossible love between two young people from rival families ties in seamlessly with this season’s theme at the Flanders Opera: ‘Fatal Attraction’.

The young Russian choreographer Slava Samodurov sees this Italian story, told by a British writer and set to music by a Russian composer, as a powerful cocktail. ‘I don’t want Romeo and Juliet to be lyrical. I want wild temperament from both of them. It is only those who are utterly absorbed by love that are pushed to extremes. The normal teenage girl does not stab herself.’ This is how he expresses his searing vision of the work.

The performances will be accompanied live by the Brussels Philharmonic in Ghent and the Flanders Symphony Orchestra in Antwerp.
